When the airport at Madiera needed to extend their infamously short runway, they didn’t fill in the adjacent ocean with landfill, the default solution. Instead, they constructed a bridge, an impressive feat of engineering. Meanwhile, the space underneath was well lit and airy enough that they built tennis courts. Playing there must be epic, with the roar of planes above and the ocean just off the baseline.
